Terms of use

These terms govern your use of word·shift at wordshift.ai. By using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Who we are

word·shift is an independent publishing tool. If you have any questions, please use the contact form.

Age

word·shift is intended for users aged 13 and over. If you are under 18, you should have the consent of a parent or guardian before using this service. By using word·shift you confirm that you meet these requirements.

What the service is

word·shift allows you to search words and phrases in the Google Books Ngram corpus and view how their frequency in published English books has changed between 1800 and 2022. Annotations are generated by an AI language model. The service is provided free of charge and without registration.

Accuracy and limitations

The data displayed on word·shift comes from the Google Books Ngram corpus, which is a sample of published books and not a complete record of the English language. Frequency patterns may reflect the composition of the corpus rather than genuine cultural trends. AI-generated annotations are provided for guidance only and may contain errors, omissions or misinterpretations. You should not rely on them as primary sources for academic, legal or professional purposes.

Acceptable use

You may use word·shift for personal, educational, research and journalistic purposes. You may not use the service to generate, store or distribute harmful, abusive or unlawful content, or to attempt to circumvent, overload or interfere with the service or its infrastructure.

Content that may appear

word·shift allows free-text search of any word or phrase. The corpus contains the full range of language found in published books since 1800, including language that some users may find offensive. We do not filter search terms. Users are responsible for the searches they make.

Intellectual property

The word·shift name, design and original editorial content are the property of Lee McGorie. The underlying Ngram data is provided by Google under their terms of service. AI-generated annotations are produced dynamically and are not claimed as original works.

Availability

word·shift is provided on an as-is basis. We make no guarantee of continuous availability and reserve the right to modify, suspend or discontinue the service at any time without notice.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by English law, word·shift and its operator accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from your use of the service, reliance on its content, or inability to access it.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
